Serenity Hill Chalet, Murphy, NC

Welcome to Our Mountain Home!

When we first found this treasure of a chalet, nestled back on the side of a hill in the mountains of North Carolina, we knew immediately that this was the one. This would become our mountain home. It is secluded and quiet, and a perfect restful and relaxing (not to mention romantic!) retreat.

We live and work in Atlanta, and with the fast pace of life associated with living in a major city, we needed a place to escape, to relax and unwind, and well, to just breathe! And it's only two hours away, so it's close enough for us to be able to go whenever we need to, or want to.

And what an escape it is! Once we got through the "work" part, of furnishing and getting it setup just the way we wanted, the first weekend of pure leisure and relaxation was heavenly. There is a little creek and waterfall just off the side-screened in porch off the master bedroom, and we had a great thunderstorm which got the waterfall going. We sat out there for hours talking and sipping wine, and just enjoying the sounds of nature. We left all the doors and windows open at night (this was in September and it was the perfect temperature) for the soft breeze to keep the air fresh inside.

But oh, the early morning walk and sitting out on the front deck, with a steaming mug of coffee , looking out at the hills and valleys and woodlands of the mountain, was just so incredibly peaceful. The stress and demands of every day life just fell away as I propped my feet up on the railing and rocked slowly back and forth.

We had some friends come up and we spent a great long afternoon and evening, grilling steaks and swapping stories, and just enjoying the companionship of friends. (In addition to the master bedroom and bath on the main level, we have two queen-size bedrooms and a full bath upstairs, with another smaller deck off of a little common loft area.) After our dinner had settled, we grabbed our towels and headed for the hot tub and just sank into the heat of a therapeutic spa.

On Sunday morning we got up and Caroll fixed us his special veggie omelets, and then we went into Brasstown and wandered around the John Campbell Folk School, watching as folks made an amazing variety of arts and crafts. And then of course, we had to spend some time at the Moose Hollow Trading Company looking at all of the cabin-ware (which has become one of our favorite pastimes ;~). There are quite a few activities to do in the area, if you want more than just peaceful quiet and restful relaxation, including horseback riding and river rafting (you can read more about those on the Activities tab).

And all of the seasons are spectacular. In the Spring you have the rains and the flowers blooming in the garden behind the cabin. In early Summer, the rhododendron in full bloom on the side of the hill. In the middle of Summer, it's much cooler in the mountains than it is in hot Atlanta! In the Fall of course, you have the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. And in the winter, you have the cozy feeling of romantic seclusion, sitting with a good book in front of the fireplace.

But for us, it really has become our second home. We have opened it up now to our friends and our guests, and we welcome you to come and share this wonderful place, and we hope you enjoy it every bit as much as we do. We miss it when we don't get to come up for a while, but it doesn't matter when we go, it's always the same: a truly wonderful place to get away.
